The hand woven ASHANTI basket has bright Ghanaian colour flashes of pink, black, orange, red and turquoise.

Perfect for picking up bits and bobs at the local market and for carrying picnics and blankets on days out in the countryside, our woven bicycle baskets can also be attached to the back of your bike as a stylish rear pannier.

Each hand crafted bike basket is a little work of art, taking up to three days to weave. Made from indigenous veta vera grass – also known as Elephant Grass – the preparation process is lengthy: grass is harvested, split, hand-rolled and dyed in boiling water before a skilled weaver in Northern Ghana sets to work.

Most of the weavers in the Northern Ghana cooperative are arable and livestock farmers, though relying so heavily on a season’s rainfall makes for unpredictable income. Basket weaving - a skill passed down the generations in most families – has become a source of supplementary income for these communities in the dry seasons, helping families to meet their basic living costs. To own one of our woven baskets is to become a part of this legacy, helping women and families towards a more sustainable way of life.

Material:  VETA VERA GRASS & LEATHER

Dimensions: W35cm x D25cm x H25cm (approx)

Two leather straps are included.

If your basket gets wet, simply leave it to dry naturally and re-shape. When not in use, we recommend storing somewhere completely dry (and damp proof!)

As each basket is individually handmade, some variation in size and colour may occur.
